The ONLY solution I have discovered for this case is to backup whatever important local data from those machines, reinstall the OS, reinstall all pertinent software and copy the data back onto the local hard drive. We attempted that method maybe a dozen times across a few machines. We contacted Sophos support, allowed a tech to remote in and run their removal script for the failed Sophos installation, attempted to re-install, this attempt also failed. We removed all traces from the registry, Sophos failed to install.
A trend micro version had been installed at some point on some old PCs prior to our acquisition of those assets.
